Dark moth on tree bark - Hypagyrtis esther - male

Dark moth on tree bark - Hypagyrtis esther - Male
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
August 14, 2006
Size: ~25mm wingspan
We saw this dark moth resting on a tree in an oak hickory woodland. Didn't see the bug in front of his face until we got the image on the computer.

Moved
Moved from Hypagyrtis. Placed on Hypagyrtis esther at MPG

Bob Belmont Agrees with Hypagyrtis....
... but can't go beyond that. The strong border markings I have seen in only one other photo -- Joanne Shuman's 6655 -- Esther Variant Moth -- Hypagyrtis esther seen here:

The lighter markings could probably be found on any of the Hypagyrtis spp.

I suspect 6655 - Esther Variant Moth - Hypagyrtis esther
.... melanistic or aberration. Could be another Hypagyrtis. This is weird but beautiful. I'll try to get confirmation.
