Efferia [Pogonioefferia] pogonias - Efferia pogonias - male

Efferia [Pogonioefferia] pogonias - Efferia pogonias - Male
Mason Farm Biological Reserve, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
July 2, 1993
The genus Efferia has been split, apparently. (See Herschel Raney's pages on Efferids.) Since I'm so unfamiliar with the taxonomy, I'm filing this image under Efferia, at least for now. This fly is a male, obvious from the bulb at the end of the abdomen instead of an ovipositor. Herschel Raney identifies it as one of the Pogoniefferia group, as opposed to a Nerax, see comments. (So it should be P. pogonias, according to various checklists--see guide page.)
Image updated 2019 with a slightly better scan.

Efferia
Yes, the Efferia were split by the south American expert. But many have decided not to accept the split. However, this would fall into the Pogoniefferia group. Nerax should be smaller and hairier.
