Size: 7 mm nose to wingtips

Caught in a net as it was sitting on a dandelion.
This is the same type of fly that I posted yesterday here:

as in males it's really the best way to tell Platycheirus and Melanostoma apart (males of both have quadrate markings, so that doesn't help, and this fly's face doesn't really protrude.

I'm having trouble even finding this guy's metasternum - it certainly doesn't look well developed to me, rather reduced. So Melanostoma it is!
