Moved from Springtails and allies.

I'm happy to keep them, but a little confused.... This is the "true one"? Are some of the others in the Guide less than authentic in some way?

Well...
there has been some confusion, among taxonomists, about the true nature of E. atrocincta and E. nigrocincta. Eventually in 2012, Jordana concluded that E. atrocincta, a typical USA species, also occures in Europe. He synonymised E. flava Lie-Pettersen 1896, E. clitellaria Guthrie 1903 (partim), E. nigrocincta Denis 1924 (partim), E. nigrocincta Denis 1923 (auct., partim), E. pseudoperpulchra Mills 1931, and E. atrocincta lineata Delamare Debouteville 1947 to E. atrocincta. All European pre2008 records must be confirmed and are possibly confused with the dimorphic E. nigrocincta. Specimens from South America, New Zealand and Australia must be confirmed.
E. nigrocincta is a European species and is typically dimorphic. The male resembles E. atrocincta and the female resembles E. multifasciata.
I recorded the dimorphic nigrocincta also from the USA, and possibly (mis)identified it in pre2012 records as atrocincta...
Given no US taxonomist published E. nigrocincta records from the USA, those dimorphic E. records can only tentativelly be recorded in bugguide as E. atrocinta forma nigrocincta, while awaiting a formal revision of USA presence of E. nigrocincta.
Hence the 'true form' versus the 'forma nigrocincta'.
I hope this helps ;-)

Very helpful, thanks!
Would it be worth our while to create a No Taxon "forma nigrocincta" page? Or is the taxonomy too muddled at this point to bother? (If we were to create such a page, of course, you'd need to tell me which images to put there.)

You could create a E. atrocincta forma nigrocincta page
Then I could review all E. atrocincta entries at bugguide and indicate which could be moved.

Page created
As you get the chance, just let me know which images need to be moved. No rush.

Done! ;-)
I have provided the 'forma nigrocincta' comment whenever it was appicable. I found only 1 male (with characteristic black thoracic band).

Some of your original IDs were...
..."Entomobrya cf nigrocincta." Do those go on the "forma nigrocincta" page, too? Or am I to move only those with new comments?

Thanks!

Good point!
They should be moved as well. And the cf nigrocincta webpage should be removed.

Thanks
There were just a couple of pics on the main atrocincta page, and they've been moved. I don't think a special page was ever created.

Entomobrya atrocincta
The true one! Pls do not frass. Pictures of it are rare...
