Probably ? 7687 - Phyllodesma americana - American Lappet Moth
... I say probably because there is a second species in California, Phyllodesma coturnix, and I am not certain how to distinguish them from photographs.

Hi Bob,
Thank you so much for the Lappet moth information. I did some research (after your message) and learned there are only 3 possibly 4 species of this moth in North America. I also learned a new word: lappet!
