Possibly a Progomphus obscurus
aka Common Sanddragon but not 100% sure.

Looking through my field guide I had this sanddragon as a contender, but at least in my book the yellow markings look different, so now I am hoping somebody else can let me know if this is really a common sanddragon, thank you so much for answering

Thank you, is it only possible to distinguish these 2 by examining the genitalia? Unfortunately all my pictures from this dragonfly are out of focus at the tail end

 
yes
you need a very good sharp closeup of the cerci of males or the top of the head or subgenital plate (underneath the butt end) of females.
