Enormous Springtail - Pogonognathellus nigritus
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
June 7, 2014
Size: 5.5mm
A dorsal view showing a nice row of four little white spots near the end of its abdomen (I'm sure there's a more technical way to say that, but you know what I mean).

The white spots...
mark the cuplike cuticular depressions in which the bothriotricha are placed. Bothriotricha are mechanoreceptive sensilla that can sense movements of the shaft of the sensillum in all directions (kind of like in a computer game joystick). They are present in all Tomoceridae but are distinctly visible in this dark species.

Oh, they go the other way
I had the impression they stuck out rather than in. Thanks for the explanation!
