Spilomyia - note eye stripes (probably a tabanid mimic, as you say?) with spurious vein. Keyed with Curran 1951 - pleura black with yellowish markings, scutellum reddish, second abdominal segment with some yellow behind a black band and other black bands on abdomen narrow, anterior tibiae black on apical 3/4 makes this Spilomyia alcimus (in Curran this is S. hamifera but that's a junior synonym).

They're feisty little buggers
They're feisty little buggers - I'm always amazed that people get clear shots of the smaller syrphids especially. I'm lucky to get one clear shot of anything! Nice work.
