Ant - Camponotus

Ant - Camponotus
East Central, Oklahoma, USA
December 27, 2004
I found these ants while I was having an old and almost dead hackberry tree cut down. They were inside the trunk.
Size about 6mm.

Carpenter ant
I will venture that this is a carpenter ant, Camponotus sp. Many carpenter ants actually nest in the soil. They do not eat wood as termites do, but merely chew out nesting chambers. There is a new book coming out about carpenter ants of North America, by Laurel Hansen and another author, Cornell University Press.

Thanks Eric. When I post this on my site I I have a shot of a section of the trunk which shows the chambers they made.
