unknown orange black beetle - Danosoma brevicorne
Minto, Sunbury County, New Brunswick, Canada
June 17, 2014
Size: 16mm
Landed on my patio screen, sunny 24C degrees. I assume its a beetle.

Moved
Moved from Danosoma.

Thanks ...
... for the ID Jonathan!

Moved
Having studied some recent Danosoma has made me re-evaluate my initial ID. Thanks for catching Denis!

Moved from Marbled Click Beetle.

Moved tentatively...
any chance of seeing the underside?

Moved from Beetles.

Is the other possible candidate Danosoma?
If so, I wonder if "mine" from a few years back is actually Lacon rather than Danosoma:

could be...
the two can be tough dorsally. The best way to separate them is the presence (Lacon marmoratus) or absence (Danosoma spp.) of tarsal grooves on the hypomeron. Note, the tarsal grooves are not present on ALL Lacon, but they are on marmoratus.

No records of L marmoratus for the Maritimes YET
Not that it is not possible, but to date, there have been no records of L marmoratus for the Canadian Maritimes or even the next-door State of Maine:
1) http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/environment/NHR/PDF/Maritime_Elateridae.pdf
AND
2)http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3337055/

so although we cannot be certain without seeing said characters, it would it not be far more likely that it is Danosoma brevicorne than L. marmoratus? The only Lacon sp. recorded to date in the Maritimes is Lacon auroratus.

Underside
That was fast! Thanks! The image was quite dark and I did brighten it to try for some detail ... best I could do. edit - I deleted the underside image I had added as it was very poor and useless
