Possible Ichneumon Wasp - Megarhyssa macrurus

Possible Ichneumon Wasp - Megarhyssa macrurus
Mississauga, Peel Region, Ontario, Canada
June 16, 2014
Size: Approx. 6 inches plus
This wasp or wasp-like creature was trying to fly awkwardly among the tall grasses / rushes / plants in a dry marsh area in Riverwood Conservancy in Mississauga. It appeared to be either laying eggs, or feeding, or perhaps just sunning as it would fly, land for a few seconds, then fly a few inches further away. It was a cool (17 C) sunny fairly calm day. The "tail" of the creature was extremely long, I would have estimated about 4 inches, and much, much longer than the body.

Presumably wandering in an attempt to locate trees infested by the pidgeon Tremex. Would probably be inclined to feed on sweet liquids like honeydew, but perhaps it wouldn't be likely that marsh vegetation would be a source for that.

Moved from ID Request.
