Unknown Odonate - Possibly Great Blue Skimmer - Libellula axilena - male

Unknown Odonate - Possibly Great Blue Skimmer - Libellula axilena - Male
Blowing Rock, Watauga County, North Carolina, USA
June 16, 2014
Upon first glance this appears to be a Great Blue Skimmer, however the number of dark markings on the wings, the blue face and lack of black on the abdomen suggest that it may be something different. Maybe even a Slaty or Bar-winged Skimmer? It also has a thick brown patch on the thorax. Any help would be greatly appreciated! (please see attached images as well)
