Thalpius Thalpius Thalpius Thalpius

Thalpius dorsalis
based on my passing this specimen through available keys. This one is smaller than most (ABL ~ 4.9 mm) and it is colored more orange than most (possibly from immaturity). See link in my profile for an updated taxonomic key to North American species of "Thalpius" (best kept at genus level in my opinion). I am observing much color variation in several series of apparent T. dorsalis: some series uniformly dark brown, others uniformly rufotestaceous like this one, other series with distinct dark cloud atop elytra. The three most likely possibilities to explain the color variation are as follows: (1) different states of maturity; (2) regional variations (possible grounds for "subspecies"); (3) really a complex of sibling species that await refined morphological study and/or molecular analysis.

Thank you Iustin for this photo-voucher which will be important for my ongoing studies of Thalpius. Put Thalpius high on your capture list for me. Almost all specimens are taken at lights (often UV). How was this one captured?

Thank you
This one was attracted to light, too. (outdoor/backyard light bulb)

Moved tent.
Moved from Beetles.
