Spider BG559 - Eris flava - male

Spider BG559 - Eris flava - Male
Near east shore of Lake St. John, Concordia Parish, Louisiana, USA
November 24, 2006
Size: body length 6.1 mm.
Somewhere, I learned that structure takes precedence over pattern. Based on this premise, we are placing our specimen in Eris flava. The paper by Wayne Maddison on separating E. flava and E. militaris may be seen here. Our specimen appears to have the pattern (on the carapace) of E. militaris, and the structure (slender, elongated embolus on the palp) of E. flava. Our specimen was collected on an old table on which was stacked old folding chairs and wooden boxes plus lots of leaves shed by a nearby Pecan tree. In spite of the late date, an estimated 60-80 individual spiders of several species were present.
You might want to compare this with Jay Barnes' fine images of E. militaris here.
We are open to correction if we have overlooked something.
Three female Eris were collected at the same time and place. Two of them may be seen here and here.
