Pasture Grasshopper - Melanoplus confusus - male

Pasture Grasshopper - Melanoplus confusus - Male
Thedford Conservation Area, Lambton, Ontario, Canada
June 24, 2004
Size: body 16-18 mm
This one has the characteristics of Melanoplus confusus mentioned here and in the Guide: cream-colored underside, greenish-blue hind tibia, orange-bottomed hind femur with diagonal bands on the side, and black patch behind the eye and on the pronotal lobe. The dark diagonal stripe through the eye with a thin light line on both sides is apparently a diagnostic character of the nymphs - still noticeable in this adult.
The Lakin Grasshopper is similar except for a pale stripe on top of the head and pronotum, and is a midwestern species that doesn't occur in Canada.

M. confusus
This one was found in appropriate habitat (dry sandy clearing) adjacent to Pinery Provincial Park where Jeff Skevington et al collected this species in the 1990s. Image moved from Melanoplus page to new species page.

subgenital plate
You can see enough of the shape of the subgenital plate to back up this identification too. It is very distinctive in shape.
