Does the male have pronotal setae?
excluding around the edges?

setae
Yes, this male has setae, not scales. You know, I have handle hundreds of P. decemlineata from different locations and only a few P. crinita, but they recognizable even how they sound. Anyway check two new photos with specific structures on pronotum for these two species. Thanks.

Concur, Polyphylla crinita ...
Just out of curiosity, were these from coastal dunes, a sand dune field, or some sandy habitat? Thanks.

habitat...
I had my BL set inside of the sand dune field. I was trying to catch a moment when they were coming out from sand but no luck on that so far, maybe next year :)
Thanks for your attention!

10-Lined June Beetle
This one is easy to find. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten-lined_June_beetle
Polyphylla decemlineata

Please see...
my images of ten-lined June beetle here for comparison: http://bugguide.net/node/view/684561.
I know, those two species are pretty tough to distinguish. Anyway, bigger size, different sound in flight, typical habitat and most importantly - hairy (not scaly) pronotum make me feel this is Long-haired June beetle (Polyphylla crinita), not P. decemlineata.
