Distinctive Syrphid - Asemosyrphus polygrammus - male

Distinctive Syrphid - Asemosyrphus polygrammus - Male
San Joaquin Marsh, Irvine, Orange County, California, USA
February 9, 2007
Size: Medium-Large
This one has a couple points of difference over most other syrphids. Fairly obvious are the huge back legs, akin to Syritta pipiens. What may be unique - unless it's a matter of excessive wear - are the edges of the wings. A papermaker or printer would call this a deckle edge. (This feature is detailed in the last photo.)

Lejops (Asemosyrphus) polygrammus
Hello Ron,
Compare your pictures with the ones already there in the guide, and you'll see it's a female of lejops (Asemosyrphus) polygrammus!
Greetings

Thanks much, Gerard
I never would have found that on my own. Today, I found another intriguing syrphid, which I'll post soon. Flies are my favorites, and syrphids are my favorite flies. (Bee flies are a close second.)
