Monarch on Shepard's Needle - Danaus plexippus

Monarch on Shepard's Needle - Danaus plexippus
Seminole, Pinellas County, Florida, USA
February 4, 2007
Size: approx 4"
Quite a few of these have been about, even this late in the winter.

Moved
Moved from Viceroy.

Aren't they year-round in Florida?
I thought they were. Also, do you know if any overwinter there? I'm interested in parallels and contrasts to Southern California, believing they're year-round residents here and trying to prove it.

BTW, this post somehow wound up in the Viceroy section.

Year round?
I don't know if they are or not. I don't remember seeing them all through the year here, but I wasn't always looking either. Now I will be.

Thanks for the input and also pointing out that I was on the wrong guide page.

Good; keep looking.
Per the data map, I need them for April, May, June and July, but we do have count records for July. I'm almost certain yours are there full time. Thus far, Florida is missing June, August, September and October. What's most puzzling to me are the gaps in Texas, another place that's supposed to have Monarchs year-round. Well, often the more common, the less photographed.
