Would love to know what flower fly this is - if an expert can take a close look and tell me I'd be gratefully appreciative. I spent a lot of time on my stomach watching it fly in and out from this micro-site ( an old photography blind deteriorating in my backyard meadow where a little soil has deposited on the top ) a weird place for this flower fly to hone in on. It would come back every 30 seconds or so to what I believe was to lay a single egg on the surface, fly off, come back, fly off lay again ..... the event lasted 15 minutes +/- . Why this very xeric open site I do not know. I am only assuming she was ovipositing ... some one with a greater understanding of this guild may want to weigh in...... many thanks
