Eastern Cicada Killer - Sphecius speciosus

Eastern Cicada Killer - Sphecius speciosus
Onondaga Cave State Park, Crawford County, Missouri, USA
July 10, 2014
We visit this park a few times every year and these are almost always present and always in the same place, in a very small section of a two or three acre mowed field. The small area of the field that they stay in is no more than 30 feet deep and runs parallel to the lake for about fifty yards. The rest of the field seems to be of no interest to them, although it all looks the same to us. The only vegetation other than the mowed grass is a narrow strip right next to the lake that is too rough to be mowed.
