Identification
Eyes bare, holoptic in both sexes;
Antenna near bottom of head, flagellum short and rod-like with 1-6 apical setae;
Mouthparts absent, no proboscis;
Abdominal segments typically with posterior bands of uniform width, generally wider in males (details below);
Wing venation distinctive: veins appearing reduced and intermittent, more or less parallel and "streaked", with few or no closed cells;
Tibia not produced apically

Remarks
Sexes differ in the form of bands on tergites
(3): in males, fasciae well-defined, rather wide, ⅓-⅔ the length of the segment, those on segments 4 & 5 usually wider than those on segments 2 & 3; fasciae in females are somewhat vague, narrow to linear, faint, or absent, the abdominal dorsum looking dark -- see figs
