Definitely a phengogidae. An adult female (which stays larva-like); only males develop wings.

how neat thanx
i didnt know that about adult females! do they feed off any specific thing? i released it thinking it was immature but thought they might be an interesting beetle to start a culture of.

Zarhipis sp.
Being that this is from California, it is likely a species in the genus Zarhipis. Larvae prey exclusively on millipedes; not sure whether adults feed or not. Males are much more beetle-like:-)
