Evolution of my sad equipment

Evolution of my sad equipment
I have a small point-and-shoot camera, but it lets me get pretty close for macro shots. The problems are that the flash is either ON or OFF, there is no 50% flash, 25% flash, etc. When I'm one or two inches from a bug 100% flash is way too much. Also, the flash is a small "point source" on one side of the lens giving lighting from only a small angle. Some flash diffusion, reduction, and a ring-light would be nice. But, I only have a cheap camera that can't do much and I'm not willing to pay more for attachments than I was for the camera itself (someday I'll buy a better camera and get attachments for it).

Phase one, reduction and a little diffusion
I tried blocking the flash a little with part of my finger to reduce to flash 50% or so, and this worked pretty well sometimes, but the light that traveled through my finger sometimes hit the subject and added a red light.
Then came the Styrofoam block
I used a utility knife to hollow out a block of Styrofoam to fit the camera. By making the hole off-center I was able to flip it over to select two different thicknesses.

Frassed

Please, don't frass
This would prove that there is no excuse for poor photography. Some people blame their equipment, but this series, accompanied by some of the fine photos you have taken with this setup could be very educational to the casual photographer.
