Size: 9 mm jaws to body rear
Found at 4:00 PM NDT on 10-Jul-2014. Taken home in a plastic container and photographed 12-Jun-2014. There were quite a few ants crawling around this area but I didn't see any actual colony or ant hill.

Camponotus
Its a Camponotus sp., a Carpenter Ant - they make their nests in wood cavities (some create the cavities themselves, others use pre-existing ones) so that's why you didn't see the colony.
