Linepithema humile? - Liometopum occidentale
1.6 mi. N of Antelope Fire Control Station, Willow Springs, San Benito County, California, USA
July 11, 2014
Size: 4.7mm length
Found this guy policing our picnic table after lunch at our place in the boonies. I suspect it is just a common Argentine Ant, but I always like to have confirmation of my IDs whenever possible.

Thank you E.E. for the species ID.

Liometopum occidentale
Happily not an Argentine ant but an indigenous ant. Notice the shape of the profile, which is boxy and pretty much straight across here. In Linepithema the propodeum is distinct from the mesonotum, so there are two "steps" to the profile. Liometopum occidentale are also bicolored and polymorphic and have a characteristic odor when crushed, which are nice characters for the field
