Size: 2" tall or so
I found this on our porch at night in Austin, Texas. Have never seen such a moth, and was awed by its remarkable markings on its wings, which look as if branches and twigs were imprinted on them.

Eumorpha vitis to me, but wait for an expert

Yes that is it -- and the fact that we have quite a bit of wild grape vine and daturas (jimson weed)on our property seems to confirm it.
