We're thinking maybe Pastinaca

Be careful. It's sap contains a phototoxin that causes blistering.

Wild parsnip.
Confirmed! I went back today and the plant definitely is wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa). I have learned that it is actually very common in my area. I crosschecked too for the caterpillar and I believe it is Depressaria pastinacella.

Mystery solved. Thank you!

Unfortunately no - it was not a plant that I am familiar with. But I can easily go back there and pay special attention to the plant in question. Maybe tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday at the latest.

Ermine Moth?
It reminds me of one of the Ermine Moths, Yponomeutidae, but there may be others that are similar.
I was not able to find an exact match.

Edit: Actually, I like J&J's suggestion of Pastinaca better, the host plant seems to match.
