Flesh fly (Sarcophaga sp.)
Robust legs and, indeed, bright red compound eyes are the hallmarks for these large flies. Most other Sarcophagidae are smaller or have more "conventional" legs.

Richard, I think your info may clear up a couple more mysteries. I had an entirely different take on flesh flies, i.e. squatty, broad tri-striped back, very grey.
