Fuzzy, metallic syrphid? - Paragus haemorrhous

Fuzzy, metallic syrphid? - Paragus haemorrhous
Fullerton Arboretum, Fullerton, Orange County, California, USA
February 21, 2007
I thought "paragus" when I was shooting it, primarily due to the size, shape and posture. However, the only paragus I'd seen up to this point were a little lighter overall and had a very red abdomen.

In checking Bug Guide pages, I did discover a dark, monochromatic version and wonder how much variation there is in these insects. See:

Paragus
You are right it is a Paragus. And the variation is great, the amount of red shows great variation , sometimes there is a bit yellow in some species, and many species have been described because of their color pattern... which gives no indication about the species idendity... You can only ID these species by the male genitalia, which have many good characters... Often specimens from cold places (early in the year or high up the mountains) are darker than specimens from hot places...

Thanks, Martin, for the confirmation and detail.
This is the second deceptively dark insect I shot in the last week, the other being a very dark brown honeybee.
