beetle -
Platydema americana
Knowland Park, Oakland, Alameda County, California, USA
February 16, 2007
Size: 6mm
I raised this beetle from larvae in a polypore fungus from the side of a standing, dead Monterey Pine. The fungus was also full of
ciids
.

larvae
Also just saw the larvae photos. Did the pupating larvae spin a "cocoon" of frass? If so, I have observed the larvae of P. oregonense do this.

no cocoon
There was no cocoon. They just sort of curled up and pupated on top of or under fungal hyphae and frass -- there wasn't anywhere else to do it, but they didn't seem to make use of the frass other than happening to be in the same container with it.
Thanks for the
Platydema
id!

Platydema
Sure is a Platydema. Probably either americanum or oregonense.

Diaperinae
Thanks Jim -- that looks pretty good to me. Looks very much like
Tom's
Platydema

but I'm not sure what other genera are in California.
