and since this is the larvae of these adults I've moved these to Diaperinae for now.

looks like a Tenebrionidae of some sort. The wire worm shape + presence of the mouth segment (clypeus of labrum, forgot the name) makes me think so.

He looks very elmid-like, but
He looks very elmid-like, but that's probably because I have riffle beetles on the brain. Elmids aren't terrestrial.

I would like to find an elmid -- have been looking but haven't seen one yet! Nice aquatic habitats aren't so easy to find in the immediate Bay Area.
