fritillary - Speyeria zerene - male

fritillary - Speyeria zerene - Male
near Kamas, Wasatch County, Utah, USA
July 25, 2014
New to identifying fritillaries. I now know I should have gotten underwing, but I thought that the top pattern would be diagnostic. It looks like species might be hard from the top wing pattern. This one looks to me like pictures of Speyeria mormonia. Can we tell the species from this image?

You really need an underside image, but I would guess S. zerene. It isn't S. mormonia.

Thanks, Mike. What do you see
Thanks, Mike. What do you see that rules out S. mormonia?

S. mormonia
just the wing shape (more rounded in mormonia) and the more "delicate" markings and smaller size of mormonia are distincive. Mormonia is also a higher elevation bug. I wouldn't expect to see it very commonly around Kamas but as you go higher along Mirror Lake Highway it would become very common near the top.

All your images look like S. zerene to me.

Thanks Mike. This butterfly came from about 8,000 ft on Wolf Creek Ranch .
