giant caterpillar - Papilio glaucus
omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, USA

Size: 2.5 inches
Caterpillar, has flame orange antennae that were retracted in the photo. Based on size, I'm guessing a hummingbird moth caterpillar.

Eastern Tiger
It's a 5th instar Eastern Tiger Swallowtail -- Pterourus glaucus -- using the newest uptodate genus name. It's not done eating so hopefully you got it back on it's hostplant. Potentially -- green ash, black cherry, wild plum, chokecherry. Perhaps a planted tulip tree. When it's done eating and not need any more food it will turn blackish purple.

swallowtail butterfly caterpillar of some sort
The orange appendage is an osmeterium.

nice
Good job, the caterpillar displayed its osmeterium when the kids poked at it. Totally makes sense, however we can confirm that we didn't smell anything foul upon poking the caterpillar.
