Mimosa pod borer / seed feeder

Mimosa pod borer / seed feeder
Durham, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 20, 2014
Size: egg and neonate~ 1mm long
This is a tube created by a neonate from the egg (oval, vertical structure) onto the surface of a Mimosa pod it was laid on. In other eggs that are flat against the leaf, the larva burrows into the pod surface from within the egg. In any event, the larva is protected from predators, either within the tube or the egg, until it is able to bore into the pod and find the developing seeds. Other photos show the larva just before hatch and the eggs on the pod surface surrounding the developing seed within the pod. The tube is hard and appears to be extruded.
