under wings. Could it be
an Anise Swallowtail extending
its western range?

Still within range & near host plant
Wisconsin is still within range. In fact, I saw some years ago in Dane Co.
Furthermore, according to the
Robert W. Freckmann Herbarium
of UWSP, one of their host plants (
Zanthoxylum americanum
, a.k.a. common prickly-ash) occurs in Buffalo Co.

I have seen Giant swallowtails once or twice, but this was so much smaller.

It's possible than more north
It's possible than more northerly individuals are smaller (reverse of that famous old latitudinal study about smaller and larger animals). The ventral shot sure looks good for Giant Sw.

Very interesting possibility.
It worried me to think that western butterflies might
possibly move eastward due to climate change.
