Thanks for making me take a second look! See for a similar fly that caused some confusion. Kevin Moran was right there as well about the basoflagellomere, which is also the same on this fly.

Possibly Epistrophella emarginata?
Meligramma would be a new genus for New Brunswick. These syrphids are very common on the flowers of Purple-stemmed Angelica Angelica atropurpurea locally at the moment. I did some digging and find that Epistrophella emarginata seems like a very good match unless I'm missing something? What do you think, Kelsey?
