Size: 17mm
Yellow tarsal pads lead me to Sandalus petrophya. Also, I never see Sandalus niger before late October around here. It also is a good bit smaller than the S. niger I've seen.

Likely S. petrophya
Based on the current size records for S. petrophya as well as the distinctive curve in the protonum this is almost certainly S. petrophya.

S. petrophyta
This is a perfect match for Horn's illustration of this species. The thorax is very distinctive.

When I was a general collector I also used the color of the tarsal pads to separate the two, but not sure really how valid that is!
