Endeodes collaris

Endeodes collaris
Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County, California, USA
July 30, 2014
Size: ~7mm
Found under seaweed along the beach. No clue to even subfamily.

I'll place this here for now, but when I get back home I'll make a decent composite image to replace this one: it was the best I could manage without my ring-flash setup.

Moved from ID Request.

how about Endeodes?
A melyrid

Staphylinid fake outs
Yup, definitely Endeodes. Sure looked like a Staphylinid at first glance with the abbreviated elytra and general elongated look, I never would have thought to look in Melyridae... Wish I had my American Beetles and microscope to try keying this out.

Based on the head color compared to E. basalis, I'd say you're right that this is E. collaris.
