(Ooops...meant to move this to genus Physocephala, not to P. burgessi.)

Moved
Moved from Conopinae.

Discal cell cross vein, swollen hind femora, and antennal proportions definitely indicate genus Physocephala here. But species ID is a tough call between two possibilities: P. texana or P. burgessi. Better lighting on the cheeks and coxae would have helped decide which...or better yet, a dorsal view of the thorax, clearly indicating whether there are three (possibly confluent) longitudinal black stripes, or just a single median one.

Initially I was leaning towards burgessi, but I think relative length of the 1st antennal segment is not short enough for that here. Plus, even though the view of the thoracic dorsum is oblique, the black looks to me like it's probably more than the short median stripe. So I'm now leaning towards P. texana. (If you have any other images, especially of the dorsum, please post.)

One things for sure, this is a male (it lacks a "theca" = bump under the 5th sternite).

A fly that wants you to think it's a wasp. :)
