Caterpillar 2

Suburb east of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Apartments and townhouses amid deciduous swamps.

I don't know if the pictures are sharp enough for identification but I'm even more interested in what I was seeing.

I first saw this caterpillar at 9 a.m. about 5 feet above the ground at the outer limits of a willow tree (Caterpillar 1). At 9:07 I noticed the fluff on a front pair of legs (Caterpillar 2) It appeared to still be about 5 feet high. At 10:09:30 it appeared to about 12 to 15 feet high (Caterpillar 3). Caterpillar 4 is at 10:09:41.

Am I seeing chrysalis or cocoon building.
