Bumpy-textured beetle - Megeleates sequoiarum

Bumpy-textured beetle - Megeleates sequoiarum
Warner Valley, Lassen County, California, USA
July 15, 2014
Master geologist and naturalist Paul Heiple showed me this neat beetle he had found after dark at a campground just southeast of Lassen Volcanic National Park. The campground was situated in mid-montane coniferous forest at an elevation of about 5670'.

Paul suggested Megeleates sequoiarum as a candidate ID. That looks good to me, but I'm not familiar with this group. There's one horned "odd-man-out" among the 3 current BugGuide posts for that species...which I guessed was a male, and then saw it was listed as such. So presumably the presence of the horn in the male is a sexually dimorphic character, and the other current posts are all females. If so, I guess this would also be a female.

I love the inconspicuous little eyes!
