Not one I was familiar with otherwise, so I keyed it out - what a great find! Note the very tuberculate face and bristles on the scutellum (the latter are pretty distinctive).

I just anything and everything that comes my way. I am making progress though. The other day my workmate asked why a birder has his nose in the flowers and I answered "I'm looking for new Syrphids"!!

Yes, I've been a hard core birder since age of 10, at least (almost 40 years). My interest in bugs is really only a few months old. So these days when birding is slow I bug with my camera, and people like you in BugGuide are getting me more and more interested in it!
