pointy-end underbark larvae - Xylophagus

pointy-end underbark larvae - Xylophagus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
March 1, 2007
Size: 10 - 25 mm
I have often encountered larvae that looked like these under bark but have never photographed them before that I recall. There could be more than one similar species here. I collected these from several tree species.

Xylophagidae
These are larvae of the family Xylophagidae, likely the genus Xylophagus. The pointed end is the head and the forked end is the rear... they are a bit strange looking creatures, but as you said, not unkommom...

I *did* have the ends reversed :-)
Thanks for orienting me, Martin.
