Skipper - Ochlodes sylvanoides

Skipper - Ochlodes sylvanoides
Magnuson Park, Seattle, King County, Washington, USA
August 3, 2014
Size: 17 mm
This appears to be a skipper. In fact, it looks very much like a Long Dash (Polites mystic) as described in Life Histories of Cascadia Butterflies(1). James and Nunnallee say this species "...is widely distributed across the N US and Canada but in Cascadia is restricted SE BC, NE WA, and N ID." However, Magnuson Park is on the western edge of Lake Washington, north of Seattle. Perhaps this is not P. mystic after all.

I think the flower it is on is some kind of thistle. We noticed a lot of these butterflies in the park around the ponds in the south end.

Looks like Woodland skipper

Agreed
Rod Crawford looked at this image and agrees with you. He says it "...has to be Ochlodes sylvanoides, as that is the only skipper found in Seattle urban areas at that date."
