Wasp or bee or fly? - Cimbex pacificus - female

Wasp or bee or fly? - Cimbex pacificus - Female
Tenino, Thurston County, Washington, USA
August 4, 2014
Size: 3/4 inch
I found this one crawling out from under our porch. It seems rather clumsy and
hasn't tried to fly. It has something that looks like a stinger, but it appears tucked
under the body. There is no fuzz on its body, and the head sort of looks waspish, but it
has a fat body, and very interesting markings behind the head.
