Explanation of Names
Generic name Pyrausta from Pliny, "a winged insect that was supposed to live in fire." From Pliny the Elder (11, 42, 36), see translation at Perseus Digital Library. (1)
There are 61 named species of the genus Pyrausta in our area. (2) This makes it by far the most speciose Pyraloid genus in our area.
