Kyle, I have been comparing your images
,
, and
with this one to see if I can move them from Notodontae to Genus at least and I am having a VERY hard time. I am pretty sure they are all the same species and I am also sure they are dark, solid forms of either Macrurocampa marthesia OR the Heterocampa umbrata. I have tried every thing to find a tie breaker and the only thing I can find is size.
It has been such a long time, but do you remember anything about the size impression they made on you or do you have other references to check against your sheet thread count?
I have been studing the Heterocampa umbrata here this week and have had nice fresh specimens of all of the different looks and both sexes, so I have a pretty good comparison. The differentiation is not difficult here because to my knowledge Macrurocampa marthesia has not been seen in West Texas.
