I see these often, one or two on a cattail reed, often but not always with aphids present.

Moved from Syrphid Flies.

Although I think the larva in the attached photo is a syrphid,
the photo above seems to depict something else. It has projections at the left end that almost look like the siphunculi of an aphid, and then there's the black thing at the other end, which appears to be a head capsule but might not be. I'm not sure what the best thing to do with this photo is. Too bad we don't have clearer shots and from other angles.
