Small ants under a rock on sandy shore of river. I included a picture of a group of the ants as it appears that they are protecting the queen (much larger ant ).

Hi Pam: This was moved from ID request to unidentified ants, so the ant editors (I and a couple of others) would see it sooner. This is a common species across Canada and northern US.
Note, the "queen" is an unmated (thus still winged) female reproductive, who after copulating in a mating flight, would remove her wings and dig a little nest and raise a brood of workers, to found a new colony. If successful, she would be the queen of that colony. She is the sister, not the mother, of the workers near her.

Thanks !!
