Valgus larvae - Valgus seticollis

Valgus larvae - Valgus seticollis
Salem, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, USA
Size: about 12 mm
In less than a month these Valgus larvae have practically doubled in length, which would mean they must weigh 7 or 8 times what they did on Feb. 14, 2007. They are now more massive than an adult Valgus so I expect them to pupate soon.

I was surprised to find that there are some tiny valgus larvae in the same container, obviously another brood from eggs that were either laid just before I collected them last November or, more likely, laid by one of the adults (now all dead) that I kept in the same container. If the latter is the case, these would have to be V. seti*collis because female V. canalicula*tus has a prominent pygidial spine and the V. canaliculatus in the container did not, meaning it was a male.
